Everything You Need to Know About Transmission Fluid Changes
Your transmission is one of the most complex and expensive components in your vehicle. Yet many drivers never think about transmission fluid until something goes wrong. Our mobile transmission service team in Fort Lauderdale and Tampa puts together this complete guide.
What Transmission Fluid Does
Transmission fluid serves multiple critical functions:
- Lubrication: Reduces friction between gears, clutches, and bearings
- Cooling: Absorbs and transfers heat away from moving parts
- Hydraulic pressure: In automatic transmissions, fluid pressure engages gears
- Cleaning: Detergents keep internal passages and valves clean
- Protection: Anti-wear additives prevent metal-on-metal damage
When to Change Transmission Fluid
General guidelines:
- Automatic transmission: Every 30,000-60,000 miles
- Manual transmission: Every 30,000-60,000 miles
- CVT transmission: Every 30,000-50,000 miles (CVTs are more sensitive to fluid condition)
Florida adjustment: Due to heat and stop-and-go traffic, we recommend the shorter end of these intervals. If you commute through heavy traffic in Sunrise, St. Petersburg, or anywhere on I-95, your transmission fluid breaks down faster.
Checking Transmission Fluid Condition
Healthy transmission fluid is:
- Color: Bright red or pink (new) → light brown (used but OK) → dark brown/black (needs changing)
- Smell: Slightly sweet (new) → neutral (OK) → burnt (BAD — change immediately)
- Clarity: Translucent (good) → opaque with particles (needs changing)
Transmission Fluid Change vs. Flush
Drain and fill (fluid change):
- Removes pan, replaces filter, refills with new fluid
- Replaces about 40-50% of total fluid
- Less aggressive, lower risk
- Cost: $150-$250
Full flush:
- Machine pushes new fluid through the entire system
- Replaces 90-100% of fluid
- More thorough but controversial for high-mileage vehicles
- Cost: $200-$400
Our recommendation: For vehicles with regular maintenance history, either method works well. For vehicles with neglected maintenance (dark/burnt fluid, 100K+ miles with no service), we typically recommend a drain-and-fill to avoid dislodging debris that could cause problems.
Types of Transmission Fluid
Using the correct fluid is critical — the wrong type can destroy your transmission:
- Dexron VI: GM vehicles, many imports
- Mercon V / Mercon LV: Ford vehicles
- ATF+4: Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/Ram
- SP-IV / SP-IV-RR: Hyundai/Kia
- WS: Toyota World Standard
- NS-3 / CVT: Nissan CVT transmissions
Our technicians always use the exact fluid specified for your vehicle — no generic substitutes.
Signs Your Transmission Fluid Needs Changing
- Delayed or rough shifting
- Transmission slipping
- Unusual noises (whining, humming)
- Burning smell
- Fluid is dark or smells burnt on the dipstick
- It's been 30,000+ miles since the last change
